#NextGenRainforestRescuers, Amber & Penny, visit the Daintree
We first met #NextGenRainforestRescuers Amber & Penny back in March 2021. Since then, we’ve featured them in our blogs not once, but multiple times… and their dedication to protecting rainforests and raising awareness about cassowaries just keeps growing. Today, we’re excited to share their latest adventure in Far North Queensland!
Recently, Amber & Penny visited the Daintree with their mum & dad. We were delighted to receive this update from the girls after their visit.

“A few weeks ago, our family had the opportunity to visit the Rainforest Rescue Nursery near Cow Bay in Far North Queensland. This was a privileged, behind the scenes look at how Rainforest Rescue grow, store and distribute plants at various stages for their regeneration projects, promoting a thriving rainforest for the future.
We thank Marine, the Nursery Manager, for her kind welcome, expert knowledge and tour of the nursery. We learnt how the plants are protected by attack from animals such as the Giant White-Tailed Rat, and the sustainable ways of potting by using coconut fibres instead of plastic pots.
We gained insight into how a range of cane fields are no longer viable due to the shutdown of the last mill in the area, and how many will be revegetated to their natural state; Rainforest Rescues primary incentive.
We were also surprised to learn that there are many feral pigs all over the Daintree Rainforest, and how they are a threat to the endangered cassowaries, by eating their eggs and chicks!
After our nursery tour, Marine suggested that we travel down to nearby Cow Bay, to try our luck to spot a Southern Cassowary – and incredibly, we spotted one! It was amazing to see one in the wild. We watched it briefly as it crossed the road and then made its way into the dense rainforest, where it was immediately camouflaged. It was an unforgettable experience, and made our trip really special.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Far North Queensland, and exploring the Daintree Rainforest, and we can’t wait to visit again!”

As you can see, our Land Management team have been very busy planting!
Amber & Penny’s visit gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the work we do at the Rainforest Rescue Nursery, from sustainable plant propagation to protecting seedlings from pests. Along the way, they were lucky enough to spot a Southern Cassowary in the wild — a reminder of why protecting rainforest habitat is so important.
