Reflecting on the Canopy Awards

In Canopy Awards, Conservation, News, Restoration

As you may know, for the last two years, we have hosted the global photography competition: The Rainforest Rescue Canopy Awards, alongside and created by renowned wildlife photographers Darren Jew and Jasmine Carey. The competition has served as a platform for photographers worldwide to showcase the breathtaking beauty of rainforests.

In 2022, we saw some incredible submissions coming in from all over the world, with the Grand Prize shot captured by Matt Palmer – A stunning glimpse of the early morning landscape of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in Tasmania. Palmer’s stunning image encapsulated the serene beauty and rich biodiversity of this pristine wilderness.

Building on the success of its first year, the 2023 Canopy Awards continued to inspire awe and admiration. Benzamin Maze claimed the top prize with his captivating snap of a towering myrtle beech tree within the Blue Tiers Forest Reserve in North-East Tasmania. Once again, Tasmania’s natural splendor took center stage, captivating audiences with its unparalleled beauty.

The Canopy Awards were further enriched by the generosity of our sponsors, including Daintree Secrets, Solar Whisper, Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, F-stop, Will & Bear, Wandering Folk, The Sunglass Fix and The Scenic Route, who all donated mouth-watering prizes for our winners.

Over the past two years, the Canopy Awards have not only celebrated the visual splendor of rainforests but have also served as a powerful platform for raising global awareness of their importance. Rainforests play a crucial role in providing ecological services such as climate regulation, erosion prevention, and habitat for countless species of flora and fauna. Through the lens of talented photographers, the Canopy Awards have shed light on the intrinsic value of these vital ecosystems and the urgent need to protect them for future generations.

Despite the success of the past editions of the Canopy awards, we have mixed feelings in announcing that we are taking a break in 2024 to focus on something equally as momentous – Our 25th Anniversary! As we reflect on a quarter-century of dedication to protecting and restoring rainforests, we believe it is a milestone worth celebrating. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this new chapter in our journey towards Protecting Rainforests Forever.
