Recently we were contacted by ABC Far North Queensland’s Sharnie Kim. She’d heard about the work Rainforest Rescue supporters made possible to rehabilitate Lot 46 – you know, that oil palm plantation that Christopher Skase (booooo) used as part of his failed plans to take over Port Douglas?

Of course, the Lot 46 story is a rich one, full of emotion and commitment, blood sweat and tears. And Cassowaries. Perhaps you’ve been a Rainforest Rescuer for a long time and remember when the organisation chose to invest in what looked to an outside observer as a lost cause. And we know it wasn’t. Since we removed 180 TONNES OF RUBBISH and planted 45,000 trees, this land has come back to a point where we’ve been advised we should seek nature refuge status early in the new year. This is amazing!

I digress.

Sharnie Kim reached out about doing a story. I told her about the project, it’s history, the amount of love and effort that went into it…and connected her to our old Land Manager, Joe Reichl, as well as our long time partners and dear friends in the Daintree, Allen Sheather and Barbara Maslen. Together we provided Sharnie with enough information for her to decide this was worth a bigger effort, and we are so grateful that she did.

As a result, not only did she do a compelling story that you can see here, at ABC online, but she brought a camera crew and turned it into a wonderful Landline segment, featuring our friends, including our friend in conservation and restoration, Mayor Julia Leu.

Have a watch of this 8 minute segment introduced by Landline’s Pip Courtney.
