Our work has always been here, now it’s official

As of 31st March 2026, Rainforest Rescue is formally a Queensland-registered organisation, with our mailing address now based in Mossman, at the edge of the Daintree Rainforest.

This isn’t so much a move as it is a long-overdue alignment. Our work, our people and our purpose have been firmly rooted in Far North Queensland for years. We’ve simply brought our formal registration into line with that reality.

Our operations are based in Cow Bay, on Cape Tribulation Road, where our native nursery is the heart of what we do. That’s where the restoration work begins, and where the future of the rainforest quite literally takes root.

From southern roots grew a northern legacy

For several years, our supporter administration was based in Byron Bay, reflecting our origins in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.

Rainforest Rescue began in Mullumbimby in 1999, working to protect and restore the Big Scrub and support rainforest conservation projects more broadly.

Not long after our founding, we began urgent work in the Daintree, supporting local Wet Tropics organisations with fundraising and purchasing at risk, unprotected areas of rainforest. Baralba Corridor Nature Refuge is one of the first places in the Daintree that extended and connected to the National Park, recognising that wildlife needs areas of contiguous habitat to move through for food, shelter and genetic diversity.

Over time, our energy has been poured into vital conservation and restoration work within the Daintree Rainforest. Today, our native nursery is in Cow Bay, on Cape Tribulation Road, near to our former nursery in Diwan. We have a team of dedicated staff living and working on the ground in the Wet Tropics. Our Annual Community Tree Plantings are into their second decade in the Daintree.

This isn’t a place we visit, it’s where we are. That proximity matters. It shapes how we care for Country, how we respond to challenges and how we build lasting environmental resilience.

It’s time our formal identity reflected that.

As of 31st March, 2026, Rainforest Rescue’s mailing address is:
PO Box 1199
Mossman, Queensland 4873

Acknowledging the Big Scrub and Northern Rivers

We are proud of our heritage, as our ongoing mission to Protect Rainforests Forever and ensure native biodiversity has the space and protection to thrive still matters, regardless of the local postcode.

We acknowledge the ongoing work of our partners in New South Wales, in particular Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy and Firewheel Nursery. These inspiring, pioneering people continue to support the ongoing healing and protection of one of Australia’s most fragile Gondwanan rainforest environments, where 99% of the forest was cleared in the 19th century.

Rainforest Rescue’s team in the late 1990s and early 2000s was active in the region, co-founding Big Scrub Rainforest Day with Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy, which continues to this day. For more on our time in Big Scrub and NSW, check out our extensive Past Projects page. We’ll never forget the community there, who tirelessly helped us during the floods of 2022 that impacted thousands of people across the Northern Rivers region. Further evidence that restoration of previously cleared land is critical for a region’s future stability.

Facing into an uncertain future in the Wet Tropics

The latest State of the Wet Tropics Report makes it clear: this extraordinary World Heritage Area faces significant, increasing pressure, with many natural values deteriorating due to climate change, invasive species, and the impact of intense hydrological events. Cyclonic activity in recent years is taking its toll on the region’s ability to recover and thrive.

By continuing to focus resources, expertise and the unwavering belief of supporters towards active projects in the Daintree, we are certain that this is how we can make the most effective difference for native biodiversity and habitats.

Our monumental Oxbow project is symbolic of the need for massive, deliberate intervention on behalf of Nature, with work that builds environmental resilience in the face of uncertain threats derived from human activity.

Thank you for standing with us as times (and addresses) change. What remains the same is our shared commitment to our planet.
