LOT 41 IS A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF INTACT DAINTREE RAINFOREST

Because of you, it will be protected forever.

Thanks to your support, we have doubled the size of the protected area in the Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor.

The Daintree is one of the most significant ecosystems in the world. It is a living museum and a place of profound and unique beauty which we must protect and conserve. This region of the wet tropics contains some of the greatest biodiversity of flora, fauna and includes many of the most unique animals in the world.

Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Rd, Kimberley is a stunning example of intact Daintree rainforest…

The 18.6 ha property is like being in a giant cathedral. It’s a place of spiritual connectivity. A place where you feel more in touch with your own nature—our true, spiritual nature—and in utter awe of nature’s beauty.

The previous owner of Lot 41, Tony, has lived here for over 20 years. Sadly, his wife Cheryll passed away in 2022.

For many years, Tony and Cheryll were working to make their property a nature refuge, however, with Cheryll’s passing, Tony came to us and wanted to ensure that the property is protected forever when, one day, he passes away.

Under the terms of the purchase, Tony will have the option of continuing to live on the property and be its custodian, effectively continuing the legacy of both Cheryll and himself.

We are truly humbled by this.

BY HELPING US TO PURCHASE THIS PROPERTY YOU HAVE DOUBLED THE AMOUNT OF CONSERVED LAND IN THE CAPE KIMBERLEY WILDLIFE CORRIDOR.

Lot 41 is ideally located right next to the National Park and is adjacent to other Rainforest Rescue properties in the Milky Pine Refuge, which is within the Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor. This purchase has further contributed to these properties and enhanced connectivity by expanding the refuge and wildlife corridor.

This purchase is history in the making, both in the significant capital involved, and how this biodiversity-rich property is a significant acquisition for the nature corridor and for the overall environmental protection of the Daintree.

Below is a map showing the existing corridor with Lot 41 outlined in aqua, Rainforest Rescue refuges in red, and other purchased properties in purple.

Thank you for helping us secure Lot 41 and expand the wildlife corridor.

#ForestFlora: Although fungi, which includes yeasts, rusts, smuts, mildews, moulds, and mushrooms, isn`t technically a part of flora or fauna and inhabits its own category of organisms, we want to tell you a little about Yellow Bridal Veil (Phallus multicolor), a species of fungus in the family Phallaceae or “stinkhorns” 🍄.

The fruit body of this alien-looking fungus is characterised by a cone or bell-shaped cap on a stalk and a delicate “lace skirt” (indusium) that hangs from beneath the cap almost reaching the ground. This ‘lace skirt’ grows mostly through the night, and spends around 10 to 15 hours fully unfolding. Have you ever spent time watching it 👀?

We`re doubling our impact with less, with the help of data 🤓.

Everyday, we are surrounded by data that can help deepen our understanding of the environment and help us be more effective with the funding our supporters provide. For example, we need resources such as water, organic fertiliser and pest control to aid restoration plots. In reviewing the data, we identified some quick wins that our land management and nursery teams have implemented to lessen the demand for these resources.

This is very exciting, because when we scale this up across all the restoration plots over a longer period of time, we can see capital savings that we reallocate into other projects. We can achieve more with less!

Learn more about how we do it on our website: rainforestrescue.org.au/measuring-our-impact-doing-more-with-data (link in bio).

The Daintree is Australia’s largest and most biodiverse rainforest - it has existed far longer than any other rainforest on the planet 🌳🌳🌳. It`s kind of a BIG deal! No wonder so many of us want to protect it.

Together, we can help extend Nature Refuges and expand Wildlife Corridors, allowing the native fauna and flora to thrive… FOREVER.

Wouldn`t that be amazing? We are already doing it, but we can only do it with your help.

The Daintree rainforest is one of the most complex tropical rainforest ecosystems on Earth.

It`s also one of the most biodiverse rainforests, continuously evolving and growing, living and breathing for over 180 million years - the Daintree is a unique and remarkable wonder 💚.

It makes sense that many of us want to preserve it.

If you are feeling it too, consider becoming a Rainforest Guardian: https://www.rainforestrescue.org.au/rainforest-guardians (link in bio) 💚.

#CritterCorner: Did you know that Hercules Moths (Coscinocera hercules) don`t eat?

Well, they can`t because they don`t have mouths 😶.

As adult moths, they survive on food stores that they ate prior to metamorphosis 🐛🦋.

Hercules Moths spend most of their lives as caterpillars, and during that time they live on food plants such as the Bleeding heart (Homalanthus novoguineensis), Red bean trees (Dysoxylum mollissimum subsp. molle) and Cheese trees (Glochidion ferdinandi) 🌿.

#CritterCorner: Tree kangaroos are unique macropods found only in the rainforests of Far North Queensland and Papua New Guinea. In Australia we have two endemic species, the Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus bennettianus) and the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi), that live in the rainforest of Far North Queensland and NOWHERE ELSE in the world.

They are pretty special!

Interestingly, Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos are not nocturnal and they are active day and night (cathemeral) and will cross roads and paddocks to find new territories.

Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos are endemic to Wet Tropics Rainforests in far north Qld - south of the Daintree River down to Cardwell ranges, found mostly on the Atherton Tablelands and classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List.

Discover more about Bennett`s and Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos on our website: rainforestrescue.org.au/critter-corner-tree-kangaroos (link in bio) 💚.

Businesses can power change. And many are 💚.

Together with our business partners, we have rescued hundreds of thousands of square metres of unprotected Daintree Rainforest and planted as many trees to repair damaged lowland rainforest. And we love talking about our extraordinary supporters like @Klorane, hearing more about what drives their conservation efforts.

Together with @kloranebotanicalfoundation, we sprouted 50,000 seedlings at our new native nursery, reclaimed 1.8 Ha of Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Rd, and, in a delightful twist, watched Arnaud Vaillant, Klorane`s Chief of Finance and Operations Australia, get his hands dirty and put trees into the ground alongside our community.

We chatted with Arnaud about the culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility, Green Advocate for Australia and a lot more, all of which you can find on our website: rainforestrescue.org.au/personal-commitment-collective-impact-with-kloranes-arnaud-vaillant (head over to the News section) 💚.

Your business can support Rainforest Rescue’s Partners for Protection program in a variety of ways with tier partnerships, sponsorships, company events, workplace giving, monthly gifts and direct donations: rainforestrescue.org.au/businesses (link in bio)💚.
