Breaking News: Southern Cassowary Spotted South of the Daintree River!

We’ve had a thrilling breakthrough in our restoration work! For the first time in over four decades, a juvenile Southern Cassowary has been sighted south of the Daintree River – a major milestone in our mission to restore rainforest habitat.

Historically, all cassowary sightings by our team have occurred north of the river. But that’s changing, thanks to years of hard work and community support.

At NightWings, a former sugar cane field spanning 15 hectares is being brought back to life. With the help of partners and supporters, tens of thousands of native seedlings have been planted to reestablish the Daintree lowland rainforest and reconnect it to upland forest. This newly connected land is becoming a safe wildlife corridor for species like the endangered Southern Cassowary.

Many of the young trees are now three metres tall – well on their way to forming a natural canopy. This marks a significant step toward restoring cassowary habitat and bringing the rainforest back to its natural state.

It was on this very property that a juvenile Southern Cassowary was recently spotted – something that hasn’t happened in over 40 years! Our Daintree Land Manager, Joe Reichl, was absolutely thrilled (along with the rest of our team) and acknowledged this as a huge win for restoration:

“This is proof restoration – planting trees – really works for wildlife!”

Thank You for Making This Possible

This sighting is a powerful reminder that rainforest restoration works. It’s your support that makes these victories for biodiversity possible.

Together, we are putting nature back and it’s working.
