Every $10 enables Rainforest Rescue the equivalent of planting and maintaining one rainforest tree in the Daintree Rainforest for two years, providing habitat and food for the endangered Southern Cassowary. Cost per tree is based on the cost of propagation, planting and maintenance. Funds also go to support the operations of Rainforest Rescue in our mission to Protect Rainforests Forever.
The Endangered Southern Cassowary is one of the world’s most prehistoric birds, and the third largest. Australian Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) are endemic to the dense tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland Australia — they are regarded as a ‘keystone’ species, eating the fruits of over 240 species of rainforest plants and excreting the seeds great distances from the parent plant. Cassowary play a vital role as a ‘rainforest gardener’.
More than 80% of cassowary habitat in the coastal lowland rainforests of North Qld has been cleared. Rainforest Rescue is working to protect and restore what little cassowary habitat remains through the purchase of high conservation value rainforest and the revegetation of cleared areas of rainforest.
