Rainforest Rescue is fundraising to Buy Back and Protect Forever
three precious Daintree properties. All three properties are strategically located to increase
wildlife corridors and connect protected rainforest.
They are adjacent
to the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area and will extend the
Rainforest Rescue Milky Pine Refuge.
PRIORITY 1: Lot 19 Cape Tribulation Road, Cape Kimberley
Threat of development: Extremely high
Location: Close to five Rainforest Rescue properties and
next to the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area
Animals: germinating scats from the endangered cassowary
have been seen on this property.
Biodiversity: 147 species of plants identified on this
property
Conservation value: Extremely high
This beautiful property adjoins the Daintree National
Park/World Heritage Area and it is in close proximity to five properties owned
by Rainforest Rescue that form the Milky Pine Wildlife Refuge.
It has excellent connectivity, with continuous forest on the
back of the property leading into the Alexandra Range. The front of the property
has connectivity to a privately managed nature reserve.
The forest’s structural integrity scores 5/5 for its level
of intact canopy - with only a small amount of damage from cyclones and other
storms in one area. Large fan palms (Licuala ramsayi), Hope’s cycad (Lepidozamia
hopei) and black palms (Normanbya normanbyi) are scattered across the block
with a large stand of fan palms on the front of the property.
The threat of development is extremely high. Development
approval has been granted and council approved house plans are included with
the property sale.
PRIORITY 2: Lot 33
Cape Tribulation Road, Cape Kimberley
Threat of development: High
Location: Adjoins a Rainforest Rescue property that connects
to the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area
Animals: Rare and endangered species such as southern
cassowaries and Bennett’s tree-kangaroos have been seen in this vicinity
Biodiversity: 110 species of plants identified on this
property
Conservation value: High
PRIORITY 3: Lot 32
Cape Tribulation Road, Cape Kimberley
Threat of development: High
Location: Adjoins a Rainforest Rescue property that connects
to the Daintree National Park/World Heritage Area
Animals: Rare and endangered species such as southern
cassowaries and Bennett’s tree-kangaroos have been seen in this vicinity
Biodiversity: 118 species of plants identified on this
property
Conservation value: High
One of the most compelling reasons to save these two
properties is their connectivity with other protected lands
Lots 32 and 33
adjoin Lot 29 which is protected by Rainforest Rescue and borders the World
Heritage area. The Swamp Forest Nature Refuge extends to the east and acts as a
corridor to World Heritage land. The blocks are also in close proximity to our
other properties at 14, 16 and 29 Cape Tribulation Road and Lots 7, 9 and 10
Milky Pine Road.
Lot 33 has had very limited disturbance and will require
little to no active management. The rainforest that had been disturbed
(probably by logging many years ago) is recovering well and the under and
mid-stories are now dominated by rainforest species again.
Lot 32 has a cleared house pad and driveway; however the
rainforest has already started to reclaim them, with many species growing. It
will require no further human intervention for the rainforest to return.
The acquisition of these properties on Cape Tribulation Road
is strategic and high priority. This land provides important connectivity to
the Alexandra Range and we are particularly concerned for the protection of Lot
32. It is a highly desirable development block, with its easterly views to
Snapper Island and is ready to be built upon and developed immediately.
Several plants of limited distribution such as black palms (Normanbya
normanbyi), Daintree gardenia (Randia audasii), and Rhodomyrtus effusa grow on
these properties.
