Our β€˜Plant a Rainforest’ projects replant rainforest and re-establish habitat for plants and animals’ endemic to that specific ecosystem. We believe Trees Are The Answer.

25 YEARS PROTECTING & RESTORING RAINFORESTS

In 1999, our founders set out to protect the under-protected rainforest in Australia. What matters then still matters now. Rainforests are biodiverse, ecologically rich habitats that are important to our planet’s health. To borrow a phrase, β€œThe better time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The best time is now.”

Welcome

2024 ANNUAL COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY

Rainforest Rescue’s 2024 Annual Community Tree Planting Day is scheduled for Saturday 18 May 2024 and you’re invited!
2024 also marks our 25th birthday, and we’re so excited to celebrate with you.
An event not to be missed!

Welcome

HANDOVERΒ OF DIWANΒ RAINFOREST NURSERYΒ

In November 2023, Rainforest Rescue gifted the Diwan Rainforest Nursery to Eastern Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners organisation, Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC), in support of their propagation and restoration goals to heal country.

Welcome

DONATE NOW

When you give generously, you become part of a committed team of individuals who collectively are helping to preserve some of the most biodiverse habitats and the species that live within them on this planet.
Become a Rainforest Rescuer today!

  • β€œAt Klorane we are pharmacists, we are botanists, and we are committed to the planet. And we have been doing this for over 50 years. 2022 marks an important year as we are going one step further in our environmental actions by supporting Rainforest Rescue in growing 50,000 trees in the Daintree. It is our mission to support crucial plant rescue and protection programs, as well as inspiring a love of plant science in generations to come.”

Today marks our 25th anniversary!

Between 1999 and 2024, with YOUR support, we have…

πŸ’š Rescued 45 properties in Australia totalling 2,031,514 square metres of rainforest
🌏 Protected 32 of the rescued properties forever by achieving Nature Refuge status
🌳 Planted 353,412 trees including over 320,000 trees planted in Australia
🌱 Increased our capacity to propagate by building the Daintree’s largest Native Nursery

Thank you πŸ™πŸ‘

Together, we will make this year the BIGGEST ever for the rainforests. To borrow a phraseβ€œThe better time to plant a tree was 25 years ago. The best time is now.”

#CritterCorner: Shortly after hatching, baby cassowaries are able to walk almost immediately, and have long, pale yellowish-brown legs and no helmet-like casque on the tops of their heads yet. They are born striped and between 3 and 6 months juvenile cassowaries begin to lose their stripes, gaining a more uniform brown appearance. By 3-4 years of age, they will have gained their full adult colours.

Young cassowaries follow their cassowary father for about 9 - 18 months to learn the ropes, before facing the world on their own. Well, the Daintree, which is their world πŸ’š.

The Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) is listed as `Endangered` under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

It`s International Day of Forests 🌳🌳🌳.

We may not always think of our forests and rainforests when we take a sip of water or make a shopping list in a notebook, take medicine or build a home but our reliance is undeniable.

With the help of the 2024 `Forests and innovation` theme, we want to acknowledge and celebrate the resilience of the Daintree rainforest, one of the most universally valuable natural areas on Earth.

The Daintree has been continuously evolving and growing, living and breathing for over 180 million years, it is a unique and remarkable wonder that must be protected forever πŸ’š.

Take a moment to transport yourself to the Daintree this morning - hit play to listen to the soundscape of the rainforest πŸ’š.

#CritterCorner: Macleay`s Honeyeater (Xanthotis macleayanus) is a beautiful honeyeater endemic to Australia❀️.

If you are in Northern Queensland, from Cooktown to the southern end of the Paluma Range, keep an eye on the sky as you may spot these beauties amongst tropical dry forests and/or tropical moist lowland forests, probably chasing insects and/or enjoying some wild fruit, while assisting the forest flora though pollination.

The Milky Pine Nature Refuge and Cape Kimberley Wildlife Corridor are essential habitat that homes endangered wildlife like the Southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) and numerous rare or threatened plant species including Noah’s walnut (Endiandra microneura) and Chingia australis.

The corridor helps establish vital connectivity, providing wildlife with a safe haven.

Our #PartnersForProtection, like @treadright, have been instrumental in helping us protect natural habitats crucial to the survial of the precious wildlife here πŸ’š.

In July 2023, a romance was blossoming on Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Rd (which we purchased with your support in early 2023) πŸ’š.

Things must have gone very well - by October 2023, our trail cams captured an adult cassowary with two chicks in tow. Then, in January 2024, we spotted something interesting... not one, but two adult cassowaries with the two chicks!

Usually, the male cassowary is solely responsible for hatching their chicks and raising them until they are independent. But this family continues to enjoy the safe haven of Lot 41 Cape Tribulation Rd as a group of four. We can’t wait to find out, and to watch these little ones grow.

Stay tuned for more #CassowaryCam footage πŸ–€πŸ’™β€οΈπŸ“Ή.

#CritterCorner: you may (very understandably so!) think this is a dinosaur`s foot πŸ¦–πŸ‘€.

Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii)`s origins date back to the prehistoric time period (did someone say #DinosaurBirds?) πŸ’™.

Cassowaries began to evolve around 60 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, when non-avian dinosaurs were the dominant animal life on Earth.

Birds first appeared in the Jurassic period (about 150 million years ago). The extinction of terrestrial dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period (65 million years ago) allowed birds and mammals to diversify and grow larger. They also took on many of the ecological roles left open by the extinct dinosaurs.

Learn more about their evolution on our website: rainforestrescue.org.au/save-the-cassowary/evolution (link in bio) πŸ’š.

2023 was nothing short of extraordinary πŸš€.

Together, we achieved significant milestones that have set new standards for conservation and restoration in the Daintree and the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland.

We are thrilled to share that the Rainforest Rescue 2023 Annual Report is now available on our website πŸ“–.

You can download the report or explore it online at www.rainforestrescue.org.au/annual-reports (πŸ”— in bio).

This report highlights the incredible progress we’ve made thanks to the collective efforts of our global community of Rainforest Rescuers - Rescuers like YOU - who are making a difference to the future of the natural environment πŸ™πŸ’š.

Our Annual Report offers more than just statistics, it provides insights into the various conservation efforts your support makes possible and introduces you to the individuals who make up the Rainforest Rescue family. We hope you enjoy it.

As we approach our 25th year of operation later this month, we are filled with optimism for the future. Together, we will continue to propagate more trees, plant more forests, and Protect more Rainforests Forever πŸŒ±πŸ’šπŸŒ³.
