Lot 76 Rosewood Road, Cow Bay

Lot 76 Rosewood Road, Cow Bay Qld (RP 737398) is a 1.02 hectare property that was purchased by Rainforest Rescue in September 2013. It is the eighth protected property to be included in the Baralba Corridor Nature Refuge.

This property is of great importance for rainforest animals and plants in this area. It was the last property to be acquired for conservation purposes at that end of Rosewood Road.

The purchase Lot 76 has strengthened the argument for a partial road closure of Rosewood Road as Rainforest Rescue has purchased seven other properties nearby. Furthermore, the Qld government purchased other adjoining properties many years ago and combined, this creates an extensive natural reserve.

Although it lies within the Rainforest Conservation Precinct, Lot 76 Rosewood Road was one of the few remaining properties in the area that still had building approval. Its purchase by Rainforest Rescue has ensured this property is not developed and indeed, protected forever.

Conservation values

Fan palms dominate the rainforest on this property, as do many large buttress-rooted canopy trees and a number of large Hope’s cycads in the understory.

An amazing 148 plant species have been recorded on the property, and of these, six species are regarded as rare and/or vulnerable. Five of these are found nowhere else in the world. Furthermore, the Qld government has listed the property as essential habitat for the endangered southern cassowary.

The purchase of this property was made possible by generous donations from Rainforest Rescue supporters. In particular Rainforest Rescue wishes to acknowledge the contribution from the Foundation for National Parks.
