Lot 7 Forest Creek Road (RP 738430) is a 5.16 hectare property protected by Rainforest Rescue in July 2005 and named the Rainforest Rescue Nature Refuge.

The property is located in the Forest Creek Precinct, which is situated in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest south of the Alexandra Range and just north of the Daintree River. The area is a prime location for rural residential development given its proximity to the Daintree River Ferry.

Freehold land in the Forest Creek precinct can be developed for rural residential housing as it is not protected by the Cairns Regional Council conservation planning measures.

The purchase and protection of this property by Rainforest Rescue ensures that this property cannot be developed, thereby protecting critical habitat for over 122 rare, threatened and endangered species including the endangered southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johsonii) and the rare Bennett’s tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus bennettianus).

Conservation values

Located in the Daintree Lowland Rainforest, the Forest Creek precinct is recognised as an area of high biodiversity significance. It is known to contain one endangered, three vulnerable and 11 rare plants, including species endemic to the area.

Vegetation on the property is classified as 'essential habitat' for the endangered southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii), endangered spotted-tail quoll (Dasyurus maculates gracilis) and rare Bennett’s tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus bennettianus) under the Qld Vegetation Management Act 1999.

The purchase of this property was made possible by generous donations from Rainforest Rescue supporters.
