Protected Property # 9 Map - RP733182
Lot 22 Camelot Close, Cape Tribulation, QLD.
The kulki anga Nature Refuge
The 2.12 hectare property in Camelot Close, Cape Tribulation is covered in lowland tropical rainforest and has the Tribulation Creek running through it. The property lies within a Cairns Regional Council "rainforest residential precinct" and could have been developed for housing at any time. It is now declared as a Nature Refuge through an Act of the Queensland Parliament.
The high conservation value of the property has been confirmed by very large list of plants recorded in a survey of the property. There are twenty four species of ferns and an amazing 185 species of flowering plants (trees & shrubs). The largest tree found so far is an ancient Strangler Fig measuring over 11 metres circumference at chest height. An impressive specimen of Hope's Cycad stands at 6 m in height. Alexandra Palms dominate the canopy near the creek and the rainforest has many large buttressed trees and some impressive lianes (large woody vines). A very large Matchbox Bean Vine and several Small-leafed Fire Vines are also present while the under canopy is dominated by Native Nutmeg. An active Orange-footed Scrub Fowl mound is located in the middle of the block and evidence of Striped Possum foraging has been noted on several trees. The general area is classified as essential habitat for the endangered Cassowary and the rare Bennetts Tree-kangaroo.

The purchase and protection of property number nine not only saves this precious rainforest, it also prevents further developmental impact. Settlement brings with it a host of threats - clearing of rainforest, introduction of domestic predators (cats and dogs), increased traffic and road kills, greater demand for services, introduction of weed species and demands for reductions in local crocodile populations - all of which contribute to the degradation of the rainforest and impact upon wildlife.
The 9th protected property was acquired in April 2007. A Conservation Agreement with the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was entered into declaring the property a Nature Refuge – The kulki anga Nature Refuge. The property covers approximately 21,200 m2.
