Bob Irwin

Cassowary Conservation Ambassador

Bob Irwin has had a lifelong interest in wildlife and its natural environment. He established a Reptile and Fauna Park at Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast with his family, which later became Australia Zoo. His love of crocodiles saw him and his son Steve secure contracts with the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency to catch and relocate crocodiles that were involved in human conflicts. On regular trips to Cape York over the years, Bob observed Cassowaries in the wild and this has inspired him to continue his passion for wildlife conservation by helping Rainforest Rescue protect Cassowaries and their habitat today.

It’s estimated that only 1,000 Cassowaries remain in all of Australia and the number one threat to this endangered species is the loss of its tropical rainforest habitat. Bob Irwin has joined Rainforest Rescue as an Ambassador for Cassowary Conservation with an urgent message that we must protect and restore the big bird’s rainforest habitat. Rainforest Rescue’s Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project and Mission Beach Cassowary Care Project are purchasing rainforest land that would otherwise be developed for housing and protecting it forever.
