Daintree Rainforest Foundation merges with Rainforest Rescue

July 30th, 2009

After more than 13 years contributing to the conservation of the Daintree lowland rainforests between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation, the Daintree Rainforest Foundation (DRF) has elected to merge with Rainforest Rescue.

Under the terms of the merger the assets of the DRF will be transferred to Rainforest Rescue. These include properties north of the Daintree River that form the Baralba Corridor and Rainforest Rescue Nature Refuges.

“Rather than marking the demise of the DRF, this merger represents a new and exciting chapter in the effort to secure rainforests that are of international conservation significance as one of the most important regional ecosystems in the world,” said Kelvin Davies, Chief Executive Officer of Rainforest Rescue.

“We have had a long association with the DRF and have been inspired by their dedication to the conservation of the Daintree Lowland Rainforests. Through this merger we will ensure their achievements are not only maintained but enhanced and extended. This will be achieved through a combination of additional property purchases and community conservation initiatives.”

“Our commitment is reflected in the fact that Rainforest Rescue now has a full time employee, biologist David Cook dedicated to the conservation of the Daintree Lowland Rainforests,” said Kelvin.

Chris Bennett agreed: “While it is sad that the DRF will no longer exist as a distinct organisation, its spirit will live on. In fact, the combination of the expertise of Rainforest Rescue’s board, their innovative and successful fundraising activities and their commitment to employing people dedicated to the Daintree will ensure significant conservation outcomes.”

Rainforest Rescue aims to continue with the DRF’s work of purchasing freehold land in the Daintree and protecting it forever.

“People from other parts of Australia and around the world are constantly amazed that parts of the Daintree are still being developed for housing. Donations are coming from these individuals to purchase and protect the rainforest forever,” said Kelvin.

The merger of the DRF with Rainforest Rescue is expected to be completed in August.
