Sri Lanka Plant a Rainforest Project Update
April 21st, 2009
Throughout the last northeast monsoon period in 2008, Rainforest Rescue funded the replanting of eight acres of degraded rainforest patches and rubber plantations with over 5000 native rainforest trees. Over 30 endemic rainforest plants and tree species including Shoria tripesipolia, Duna ceylanica and Dipterocarpus zeylanica were planted.
The plantings were carried out on land in the Galle district villages of Baddegama and Hiniduma in the lowlands of south western Sri Lanka. The plantings were part of a community initiative and over 200 community members took part in the two-week long replanting program. Local communities engaged with the project in order to rebuild the essential ecosystem services that have been degraded through inappropriate land management practices.
Drought periods are becoming more frequent in the area and access to water has become difficult due to the loss of riverine and associated systems. The Sri Lanka Plant a Rainforest project is helping to repair these systems.
