Yossi GhinsbergInternational best selling author, Yossi Ghinsberg will be sharing his inspirational stories and survival wisdoms with the community on Thursday March 5th, 7pm at the Mullum Civic Hall in Mullumbimby.

Byron Yoga Centre Comes of Age

Byron Yoga Centre is celebrating its 21st birthday, making it the oldest established yoga school in Byron Bay and one of the oldest in Australia.  The yoga centre has been part of the landscape of Belongil Beach for the last two decades, with many locals enjoying friendly catch-ups at Belongil following classes.

To celebrate, the Byron Yoga Centre is expanding and from February 23rd will be opening a second studio at 6 Byron Street, just above Centrelink.  This studio will serve as the ‘charity arm’ for the yoga centre, offering a varied timetable of $5 and $8 classes.  The proceeds of the classes will be donated to The Buttery, a treatment centre for those seeking recovery from addiction, and Rainforest Rescue, which raises money to buy back rainforests in Australia as well as Indonesia and Ecuador. 408 New Species of Mammals Found

The discovery of more than 408 new species of mammals around the world since 1993 alerts us to how little we know of the natural world and such lack of knowledge poses a danger to our survival according to Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University.

Ehrlich compares the extinction of species to removing rivets from a plane wing suggesting that if we continue to destroy vital habitat for rare or threatened species, nature will crash. Read the rest of this entry »

Oil Palm Expansion Biggest Threat to Biodiversity

Oil PalmsScientists argue that industry sponsored disinformation campaigns are hindering efforts to slow the rapid expansion of Oil Palm plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia. In their recent article published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, Dr Lian Pin Koh and David S. Likelihood of Bushfires to Increase With Climate Change

Australia can expect an increase in the regularity and intensity of bush fires due to climate change according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).

Cassowaries Seen on Rainforest Rescue Nature Refuge
